The Ballyhaunis Community Council organised themed arts and crafts workshops at the Community Hall in September and October with funding from Creative Ireland Mayo administered by Mayo County Council.
In the first week we explored the theme of Threads and invited Ukrainian artists to demonstrate beaded embroidery and local Irish wool crafts. Participants were also given the chance to try Slavic embroidery. In the second week we explored Body Arts with a henna artist, African hair wrapping, and tattoos. The third week we focused on Pen and Paper and introduced Western Calligraphy and handcrafted cards for holidays. At the final workshop, participants were able to practice Mediterranean-style mosaics.
The workshops were delivered by members of Le Cairde Ballyhaunis, a social activity group organised by members of the Ballyhaunis Language Cafes who meet weekly to practice music and arts.
The positivity from the workshops shows a clear desire to continue these sessions. We are now exploring a way to establish regular, ongoing arts and crafts club where people gather and work on various projects in an open and supportive environment.
